Tooth Extractions in South Philadelphia

Tooth extraction is never our first choice — at Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics, we always explore every option to save a natural tooth before recommending removal. But when a tooth is beyond repair, severely infected, or creating problems that threaten your surrounding teeth and overall oral health, extraction is sometimes the most appropriate and compassionate path forward.

Our team of dentists perform tooth extractions with precision and care in our South Philadelphia office. Our priority throughout is your comfort — before, during, and after the procedure.

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

Simple Extractions

A simple extraction is performed when the tooth is visible above the gumline and can be loosened and removed with dental instruments. It’s a straightforward procedure performed under local anesthesia with minimal downtime.

Surgical Extractions

Surgical extractions are used when a tooth is impacted (trapped beneath the gum or bone), broken at the gumline, or requires sectioning for safe removal. This procedure involves a small incision in the gum tissue and is also performed under local anesthesia. We’ll let you know which type of extraction you need and what to expect.
Our Story

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

Once a tooth is removed, replacing it promptly is important to preserve the health of surrounding teeth, your bite, and your jawbone. We’ll discuss your replacement options at the time of extraction — including dental implants (the gold standard), dental bridges, or partial dentures — and help you plan the next step.
If you plan to pursue a dental implant, we may recommend a socket preservation bone graft at the time of extraction to maintain the bone volume needed for implant placement later.

After Your Extraction: What to Expect

We provide thorough post-operative instructions after every extraction. You can expect some swelling, soreness, and minor bleeding in the first 24 to 48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers manage discomfort effectively for most patients. Most people return to normal activities within one to two days for simple extractions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extractions

Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The extraction is performed under local anesthesia, so you’ll feel pressure and movement but not pain during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, soreness and swelling are expected for the first few days and are well-managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the discomfort is.
A simple extraction typically takes 20 to 40 minutes from start to finish. Surgical extractions may take 45 to 90 minutes depending on the complexity. We’ll give you an accurate time estimate at your appointment.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves before healing is complete, exposing the underlying bone. It causes significant pain typically starting three to five days after extraction. Prevention includes avoiding smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing for the first 24 to 48 hours. If you suspect dry socket, contact us promptly — it’s easily treated.
Many patients return to desk work and light activity the following day. Jobs or activities involving heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or significant talking may require a day or two longer. We’ll advise you based on the complexity of your extraction and your specific situation.
In most cases, yes. When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth gradually shift toward the gap, the opposing tooth may over-erupt, and the jawbone in the area begins to resorb. Over time, these changes affect your bite, facial structure, and the health of neighboring teeth. There are a few situations — such as extracting a third molar with no opposing tooth — where replacement may not be necessary. Dr. Pera will give you honest guidance specific to your situation.
