Fluoride Treatment in South Philadelphia

Fluoride is one of the most powerful and well-researched tools in preventive dentistry. It strengthens tooth enamel, helps reverse the earliest stages of tooth decay, and makes teeth significantly more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and food. At Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics, professional fluoride treatments are offered as part of our comprehensive preventive care program for patients of all ages.
In-office fluoride treatments deliver a much higher concentration of protective fluoride than over-the-counter toothpastes and rinses — making them particularly valuable for patients at elevated risk for cavities.

Who Benefits From Professional Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride treatments are most commonly associated with children, but they benefit patients across all age groups. We may recommend fluoride at your cleaning appointment if you have any of the following risk factors:
Why Cleaning?

How Fluoride Treatment Works

Professional fluoride is applied quickly and comfortably at the end of your cleaning appointment. It’s available in several forms including varnish, gel, or foam. Varnish is the most commonly used format — it’s painted directly onto the teeth and sets quickly, releasing fluoride gradually over several hours.
After treatment, we typically ask that you avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes to allow maximum absorption. The entire process takes just a few minutes.

Fluoride and Enamel Health

Every day, your tooth enamel loses minerals through a process called demineralization — driven by acids produced by bacteria in your mouth. Fluoride helps reverse this process by promoting remineralization, essentially helping to rebuild weakened enamel before a cavity can form. For patients who are already in early stages of decay, fluoride can actually halt or reverse the process entirely.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Fluoride Treatments

Is fluoride safe for adults?
Yes, fluoride is safe and beneficial for adults as well as children. The amounts used in dental treatments are carefully calibrated for safety and effectiveness. Professional fluoride treatments have been used in dentistry for decades and are endorsed by the American Dental Association, the CDC, and the World Health Organization.
For most adults at average risk, fluoride treatment once or twice a year alongside regular cleanings provides adequate protection. Patients at higher risk for decay may benefit from more frequent applications — up to four times per year. We’ll make a recommendation based on your individual oral health and risk profile.
Fluoridated water provides a baseline level of protection, but it doesn’t match the concentration or direct enamel contact of a professional fluoride treatment. If you’re cavity-prone or have other risk factors, an in-office treatment offers a meaningful additional layer of protection beyond what’s available through drinking water alone.
Not at all. Fluoride treatment is one of the most comfortable procedures in dentistry. Varnish is simply painted onto the surfaces of your teeth with a small brush. There’s no discomfort involved, and the process takes just a few minutes at the end of your cleaning appointment.
Fluoride treatments are typically covered at 100% for children under most dental insurance plans. Coverage for adults varies by plan — some cover it, others don’t. We’ll check your benefits in advance and let you know what to expect. Even without coverage, the cost of a fluoride treatment is modest compared to treating cavities.
