Dental Sealants in South Philadelphia

The back teeth are designed for chewing — which means they have deep grooves and pits that are excellent at trapping food and bacteria. Even careful brushing can miss these areas. Dental sealants offer a simple, effective solution: a thin protective coating applied directly to the chewing surfaces of the molars, creating a smooth barrier that helps prevent cavities from forming.
At Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics, we offer dental sealants as part of our comprehensive preventive care approach for both children and adults. It’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to protect the teeth most vulnerable to decay.
Why Sealants?

How Dental Sealants Work

Sealants are made from a safe, tooth-colored resin material that bonds directly to the tooth surface. The process is quick, painless, and requires no drilling or anesthesia. Once applied and hardened, sealants act as a physical barrier between the tooth enamel and the bacteria and acids that cause decay.

The Sealant Application Process

The entire process takes only a few minutes per tooth and involves no discomfort whatsoever.

Who Benefits From Dental Sealants?

Children and Teenagers

Sealants are most commonly recommended for children as soon as their permanent molars come in — typically between ages 6 and 12. This is the period when decay risk is highest and protective habits are still being established. Applying sealants early can prevent cavities before they ever have a chance to form.

Adults

Sealants aren’t just for kids. Adults who are cavity-prone, have deep grooves in their back teeth, or have never had sealants can benefit from them as well. If your back teeth have never had cavities or restorations, you may be a great candidate. We’ll let you know during your exam.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

With proper care, dental sealants can last up to 10 years. We check the condition of your sealants at every routine visit and can reapply them as needed. They can chip or wear over time, particularly if you grind your teeth or regularly chew hard foods — but they’re easily refreshed.

Sealants vs. Fillings: Prevention vs. Repair

Sealants are a preventive measure — they protect healthy tooth structure before decay can develop. Fillings, on the other hand, repair damage that has already occurred. Investing in sealants now is almost always less costly and less invasive than treating a cavity later.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Sealants

Are dental sealants safe?
Yes, dental sealants are considered safe and have been used effectively in dentistry for decades. They are BPA-free at our practice and are approved by the American Dental Association. The protective benefits far outweigh any theoretical concerns, and the application process is non-invasive with no drilling or anesthesia required.
The American Dental Association recommends sealants for children as soon as their first permanent molars come in, which is typically around age 6. The second set of permanent molars usually erupts around age 12. Applying sealants promptly after these teeth emerge provides the greatest protective benefit during the years when cavities are most common.
In some cases, yes. Research suggests that sealing a tooth with very early-stage decay (not yet requiring a filling) can actually halt the progression of that decay by cutting off the bacteria’s access to nutrients. This is a case-by-case decision that Dr. Pera will evaluate during your exam.
Sealants are very thin and most patients don’t notice them after the first day or two. Your bite is checked immediately after placement and any adjustments are made on the spot. Because they’re applied only to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, they don’t affect speech or comfort in any meaningful way.
Many dental insurance plans cover sealants for children up to age 14 or 18, often at 100% as a preventive benefit. Coverage for adults varies by plan. Our team will check your specific benefits before your appointment and let you know what to expect. Even without insurance, sealants are a very cost-effective investment compared to the cost of treating cavities.
