Dental Exams in South Philadelphia

A great dental exam is about more than counting cavities. At Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics, our comprehensive dental exams give us a full picture of your oral health — so we can catch issues early, address concerns before they escalate, and build a care plan that’s truly personalized to you.

Using state-of-the-art digital X-rays and 3D scanning technology, our South Philadelphia dentists, Dr. Louis Pera & Dr. Maria Pera, conduct thorough evaluations that go well beyond a surface-level look. Every exam includes a careful review of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and soft tissues — plus a routine oral cancer screening.

The Dental Exams Process

Digital X-Rays and Advanced Diagnostics

Our practice uses digital X-ray technology that delivers detailed images with significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. Digital X-rays allow us to identify cavities between teeth, bone loss, root issues, and other conditions that simply can’t be seen during a visual exam alone.
For patients who may need dental implants, complex restorations, or other advanced treatment, we also utilize 3D cone beam scanning to create precise, three-dimensional images of your teeth, bone, and surrounding anatomy. This level of detail leads to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment outcomes.

New Patient Exams

If you’re visiting Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics for the first time, we’ll conduct a thorough new patient exam that gives us a complete baseline of your oral health. This is also your opportunity to share any concerns, ask questions, and let us know what matters most to you in your dental care.
We want to understand your history, your goals, and any anxieties — so we can tailor every visit accordingly.

Routine Recall Exams

For most established patients, we recommend an exam every six months alongside your professional cleaning. These recall visits allow us to monitor changes over time, catch any new concerns early, and keep your treatment plan current.
Some patients — particularly those managing gum disease or with higher decay risk — may benefit from more frequent exams.

Why Regular Exams Matter

Many serious dental conditions develop silently. Cavities, early-stage gum disease, oral cancer, and even TMJ disorders often cause no pain until they’ve progressed significantly. Regular exams are the most reliable way to catch these conditions early — when they’re simplest and least expensive to treat.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Exams

How long does a dental exam take?
A new patient comprehensive exam typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, which includes X-rays, the full clinical exam, and time to discuss findings and answer your questions. Routine recall exams for established patients are generally shorter — around 45 to 60 minutes when combined with a cleaning.
For most patients, every six months is the standard recommendation. However, your ideal frequency depends on your oral health history, risk factors, and any active conditions. Patients with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain health conditions may need more frequent monitoring. We’ll give you a personalized recommendation based on your specific situation.
For most patients, yes — X-rays are an essential part of a thorough exam. Many conditions, including cavities between teeth, bone loss, abscesses, and tumors, are invisible to the naked eye. Digital X-rays use very low radiation levels and provide detailed images that allow us to catch these issues early. We take X-rays on a schedule appropriate to your individual risk — not unnecessarily.
If we identify a concern, we’ll explain it clearly — what it is, why it matters, and what your options are. We believe in giving you the information you need to make confident decisions about your care, without pressure or urgency tactics. If treatment is recommended, we’ll discuss timing, cost, insurance coverage, and financing options before you commit to anything.
Yes, absolutely. An oral cancer screening is included in every comprehensive exam at Pera Dentistry & Aesthetics. Dr. Pera examines the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue, throat, and lips for any signs of abnormality. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early — which is one of the many reasons regular exams are so important.
You’re not alone — and we won’t judge. Many of our patients come to us after a gap in care, sometimes years. We’ll start with a thorough new patient exam, give you a clear picture of where things stand, and work with you to build a practical plan for getting your oral health back on track. Our approach is always compassionate and judgment-free.
