What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out permanent tooth can often be reimplanted if you act quickly. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If possible, gently rinse it without scrubbing and place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist by placing it in a glass of milk or tucking it between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately — time is critical.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If there’s swelling, apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek. Avoid putting pressure on the tooth and call us to schedule an urgent appointment.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm water, gently floss around the area to make sure nothing is lodged between the teeth, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum tissue. Call us — severe, persistent pain often signals a deeper infection that needs prompt treatment.

Dental Abscess or Facial Swelling

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread rapidly. If you have significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or fever, seek emergency care immediately. Otherwise, call our office and we will prioritize your appointment.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Seek care immediately for:

Knocked-out tooth (time is critical — act within 30 to 60 minutes)
Severe, unrelenting toothache
Significant swelling of the face, jaw, or gums
Dental abscess (a painful, pus-filled infection)
Trauma to the teeth or jaw
Broken tooth with sharp edges causing injury to the mouth
Lost crown or filling causing significant pain or sensitivity
Uncontrolled bleeding in the mouth

When in doubt, call us. We’d rather talk you through a situation that turns out to be non-urgent than have you wait on something that needs prompt attention. Our team can help you assess the situation over the phone and advise on whether you need to come in the same day.

Will emergency dental care be expensive?

The cost of emergency treatment varies depending on what’s needed. We accept most PPO dental insurance plans, and emergency services are often covered as basic or major restorative care. We’ll always discuss costs and your options before proceeding with treatment, and financing through CareCredit and Sunbit is available.

Can a dental infection spread to other parts of my body?

Yes — an untreated dental abscess or infection can spread to the surrounding tissues, jaw, neck, or in serious cases, more distant areas of the body. This is why dental infections should never be ignored or managed solely with pain relievers. Antibiotics and dental treatment are both necessary, and the underlying cause must be addressed.

What should I do if a crown or filling falls out?

Call us to schedule an urgent appointment. In the meantime, dental cement available at most pharmacies can temporarily protect the tooth. Avoid chewing on that side. A lost crown or filling may not cause immediate pain, but the exposed tooth is vulnerable to damage and sensitivity — it should be re-covered as soon as possible.
